Even from an early age, Marty has always been interested in self-improvement and finding a better way to do things. She expressed her creative side in sewing, crafts, and home decorating, which she improvised to fit her needs and reflect her personality. Marty’s passion for health and wellness led her to become an aerobics instructor in the 80’s. She kept up-to-date on current nutrition information to feed her family and herself what were believed to be the healthiest foods of the time.
Then stress began to slowly creep into Marty’s life. There were the demands of marriage, children, extended family, and career. There were major events — serious accidents, illnesses and the deaths of loved ones. Add to this the daily hassles of life — “ugh, my pantyhose (remember those?) just got run in them and I’m already late for work”. On top of all this, there was the additional stress of being a perfectionist. Marty turned to food for comfort, without realizing that stress was the root of her problems.
For years Marty worked on the symptoms of stress — weight gain, loss of sleep, anger, anxiety, high cholesterol, pre-diabetes — without much sustainable success.
It wasn’t until Marty was in the most traumatic stage of her life that she identified stress as the culprit of her physical and emotional problems. Her marriage of 40+ years was crumbling. She was dealing with a highly demanding job, and traveling a long daily commute to get there. Her aging widowed mother needed increasingly more of her help. Marty finally realized she had to tackle the stress in order to survive.
To get herself physically prepared to deal with the stress, Marty turned to a Paleo diet, and exercise. She used meditation to help her get a better night’s sleep. Marty learned which supplements would give her ultimate health. She became more organized, increased her time-management skills, and learned to say “no” (an ongoing challenge). She focused more on her spirituality, and balance in her life. All of this helped Marty to make some critical decisions that changed her life — for the better!
Along the way, Marty discovered HeartMath® while she was preparing for her presentation on job stress management. It has greatly helped her increase her resilience to stress and she subsequently became a HeartMath® Certified Coach.
But she couldn’t have been as successful without the support of her daughters, her family, and her personal trainer, who not only coached her physical progress, but also became her accountability coach for nourishing her body and soul.
Today Marty continues to lead a healthful lifestyle that is personally sustainable to her. She enjoys pursuing her passion to help women become the healthiest versions of themselves. In addition to being a wellness “geek”, Marty loves being “Mimi” to her granddaughter; spending time with family; discovering, creating and preparing nutritious recipes; traveling; and, every now and then, fitting in a craft or sewing project.
